Johnny Hughes is to Texas what Carl Hiaasen is to Florida, and then some. In "A Texas Beauty, Smart and Strong", Hughes has expanded his story-telling from poker anecdotes, Old West history, and colorful one-liners to an actual novel (though nothing gets left behind). Imagine, if you will, "Great Expectations" jammed through the looking glass, kidnapped by Irish gypsies, and plopped down in the middle of the Llano Estacado, a place of vast skies, distant horizons, psychotic weather, and tenacious, eccentric, good-hearted people. The age old advice is "write what you know", and in this land, Johnny Hughes is one of the undisputed kings of the realm. Unencumbered by any stuffy editor (or even a proofreader), Hughes leads the reader on a fast-paced odyssey through the landscape and culture he loves, mixing lovers, losers, gamblers, cops, lawyers, and the tough but open handed denizens of his homeland. Hughes laces the narrative with one-liners like Milton Berle on Ritalin--above all, he means to entertain the reader. And he does. The story is episodic, building slowly to its inevitable (and enjoyable) conclusion. "Texas Beauty" is not great literature--it doesn't aspire to be--but it is a first-class beach read or airplane book--think of the best summer movies you've ever seen, and add this book to your "must " list.
